Analysis of Putin’s peace plan for Ukraine

According to the YouTube channel Combat Veteran Reacts, Putin’s administration has presented a so-called peace plan for Ukraine. The peace plan is totally unacceptable to Ukraine. I’ll go through it point by point.

Putin’s peace plan

Here are the points in Trump’s plan for peace in Ukraine: My comments on the points are below.

NATO

Kyiv must renounce its demand to join NATO and establish a neutral status

My answer: That Russia should decide on another country’s foreign and defense policy is not acceptable. Ukraine’s hopes for NATO membership are linked to the aggression Russia has shown towards Ukraine and a number of other neighboring countries. For example, Belarus and Georgia.

Land in Putin’s peace plan

Crimea, the so-called “DPR” (Donetsk), the LPR (Luhansk), as well as Kherson and Zaporizhzhia must be recognized internationally as Russian territories.

My answer: It is against UN conventions to annex territories of another country. These areas are Ukrainian. Such international recognition will pave the way for annexation elsewhere in the world. It is a green light for major powers to use military force against smaller nations. Such international recognition. For example, it will now be easier for Israel to gain support for its annexation of Palestinian territories.

Putin is also demanding that Ukraine relinquish these areas in their entirety. Ukraine still controls large parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, including the regional capitals. There is no question of Ukraine relinquishing any land to Russia.

Relations with Russia

Ukraine lifts the ban on negotiations with the Russian Federation.

My answer: Russia wants political and economic control over Ukraine. Under a peace agreement that is acceptable to both parties and is respected, a relationship will normalize somewhat. Ukraine’s laws are an internal matter in Ukraine. Russia’s actions here are an interference in a country’s internal affairs.

Peace plan for the demilitarization of Ukraine

Demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine is required.

My answer: Russia is interested in the demilitarization of Ukraine, so that it is possible with small resources to gain military control of the country at a later date. Demilitarization will also mean that Ukraine will be afraid to pursue a policy that the Kremlin does not like. It is also unheard of to demilitarize a country that has been attacked by its neighbour. If anyone should be demilitarized after the war, it is Russia. This point is obviously not acceptable.

In Putin’s propaganda, Ukraine is strangled by Nazis. This is not true. Unlike Russia, Ukraine holds free elections. Zelenskyj is a democratically elected president who has no Nazi traits. Nor does anyone else in the government or parliament.

Sanctions against Russia

Sanctions against Russia are lifted. Depleted and frozen assets are returned.

My answer: The sanctions will not be lifted until a peace plan involving full Russian withdrawal from all Ukrainian territories is lifted. Russia’s destruction in Ukraine must be paid for by Russia. My opinion is that these funds can be used to rebuild Ukraine.

Putin’s so-called peace plan will in reality mean that candidates for the presidency and parliament must somehow get the blessing of the Kremlin. This is of course not acceptable.

Laws on language and church

Ukraine must repeal laws restricting the use of Russian language, culture and church

My response: This statement must be seen in the context of Russia’s attempt to Russify Ukraine. The country has been and is bilingual. A country cannot impose its culture on another country. In Ukraine, the church is divided between the Russian Orthodox and Ukrainian Orthodox churches. Putin’s so-called peace plan is to forcibly Russify Ukraine.

The nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia

Russia rejects the US proposal to transfer control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to Ukraine and the US.

My answer: Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is part of Ukraine and an essential part of Ukraine’s power supply. This nuclear power plant belongs to Ukraine. Neither the US nor Russia should have any control whatsoever over Ukraine’s power supply.
