Then what most people expected happened. Alexei Navalny was arrested by the police shortly after the plane landed at Moscow airport this evening. Allegedly, he was arrested for violating the reporting requirement that was part of the release condition from a previous sentence. Navalny returned to Russia after his stay in Germany following an attempt to kill him in Siberia with a nerve agent in the fall of 2020.

Dangerous for the Kremlin

The list of murdered journalists and critics of Putin’s regime in Russia is long and tragic. There have been many attempts to stop Alexei Navalny, and the assassination attempt last fall was unsuccessful, but he could easily have joined the ranks of dissidents killed in Russia.

Most of the murders are carried out by what we might call proxies. That is to say, individuals or groups who are accused of the murders. Another trend is the imprisonment of opposition members, often on fabricated charges. This is also what Alexei Navalny claims. He claims that all charges against him are fabricated.

Don’t forget an arrested Navalny

Alexei Navalny

It’s easy for the world’s press to forget. Easy to let fresh news get all the attention. The fact that Navalny was arrested shortly after arriving in Russia was hardly unexpected. But the timing could easily be unfavorable for the Russian opposition. In a few days’ time, a new president will take over in the US and the world’s attention is focused there. The excitement surrounding demonstrations and trouble in Washington could easily overshadow all other events. This is not favorable for Navalny.

Opposition to Putin and his regime is severely repressed in Russia. Almost all means are used, including imprisonment and murder. Unless the eyes of the world are turned to Moscow with a critical eye, this can have major consequences.
