Assassination attempt on Trump, very sad

Assassination attempt on Trump, very sad

Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt. The perpetrator is dead. Dead is also an innocent person that the assassin’s bullet hit. The assassination of Trump is far more than an attack on a person. It’s an attack on American democracy as a whole, not on a single person. The US has a long and painful tradition of assassinating presidents and presidential candidates. Yes, the US has a long tradition of assassinating politicians in general, which is sad. The question is what happens to the political climate in the US now.

Why is the US so divided politically?

If the US had more parties, things might be different. While most countries in Western Europe have multiple parties, where it is rare for a party to have an outright majority in the national assembly, it is different in the US. Two parties are effectively fighting a battle for political power in the US. This creates a breeding ground for hatred and contempt, not respect.

Donald Trump himself is the architect of the divided American political environment. The attempted coup d’état following the 2020 election marks a turning point in US history. The assassination of Donald Trump is a new confirmation of how divided the country is. Attempting to kill a politician is a cruel act, also against democracy. Republicans and Democrats must realize that the political climate that has been created is dangerous for democracy.

Perhaps America’s big problem is the system itself. A system in which the two major parties fight a bitter battle against each other. Politics in Europe is based on cooperation and alliances. Such alliances are based on negotiations across political divides. Politics in Europe is based on mutual respect.

An assassination to wake up?

Perhaps the assassination is what it took for the US to realize that respect for each other’s opinions must form the basis of policy. Hatred and mistrust are a sign that something is wrong. Assassinations of politicians are unacceptable. The United States must embrace the most important thing of all, democracy itself.
