USA’s great Ukraine betrayal
Dette innlegget er også tilgjengelig i: Norsk bokmål Русский Українська
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that it is unrealistic that Ukraine can regain its pre-2014 borders. Furthermore, he said that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO. This was one of the things he said during the NATO Contact Group for Ukraine. He went on to say that a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia is a top priority for the US and that a peace agreement must include a guarantee in the form of an international force guarding the border. “The US will not send soldiers to Ukraine,” he continued. “This is like taking a peace plan straight out of Putin’s mouth. A great betrayal of Ukraine and Europe. The US is grossly betraying the guarantee given in 1994 when Ukraine gave its nuclear weapons to Russia. In return, Ukraine received a guarantee for its borders signed by Russia, Great Britain and the USA. Feel free to read my previous blog about this.
Europe not important to Trump

It is clear that Europe is not important to Donald Trump. Pete Hegseth also says that it is China that will get most of the attention from the US. Trump and Pete Hegseth see China as a far greater danger to the US than they see Russia as a danger. “Trump’s betrayal is not only a betrayal of Ukraine, but also of all of Western Europe.
The security guarantee given to Ukraine by the US and the UK in 2014 clearly means nothing to Trump. The fact that Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons at that time must be seen in the context of the international climate at the time. Russia was a country that was approaching the West and there were hopes of peaceful coexistence. Bill Clinton was President of the United States at the time. After Russia’s brutal assault on Ukraine, he has said that he regrets the agreement that was made. Not the guarantee that was made, but the pressure for Ukraine to give up its nuclear weapons. Peace negotiations a betrayal with folded arms
Trump clearly wants to pressure Ukraine into a peace agreement that Ukraine can’t really live with. All aid to Ukraine has been frozen for 3 months. Trump is probably willing to use economic pressure on both parties to get them to the negotiating table. The means of pressure on Russia will be to extend the sanctions. On the other hand, the carrot for Russia would be to reduce or completely remove sanctions. In the case of Ukraine, it’s a question of financial support for rebuilding the country.
In reality, Ukraine has no alternatives. The US and Russia are dictating the peace package. The American betrayal of Ukraine is complete. For the Western European countries, the question is how solid the American support for Western Europe is. This could be the beginning of the end for an alliance that has kept the peace in Europe until 2014. Perhaps a common EU defense can emerge in the wake of the US betrayal?
