A conflict between Israel and Iran?
There has been a conflict in the Middle East ever since the state of Israel was established. One year ago, Hamas killed civilians in Israel and took many hostages. Since then, Israel has been engaged in a large-scale operation to wipe out Hamas. Recently, Israel has also focused more and more of its attention on Hezbollah. Both Hamas and Hezbollah have close ties to Iran.
A conflict that needs to be resolved
Ever since the state of Israel was founded in 1948, there has been conflict in the Middle East. The Palestinians living there were not taken into account, nor was the creation of a Palestinian state. Iran, the major military power alongside Israel, supports the Palestinians’ struggle for a free Palestine. Hamas, which governs the West Bank, and Hezbollah, a militia in Lebanon, are supported by Iran. Iran and these militias do not recognize the state of Israel. Their goal is to wipe out Israel as a state.
Last year’s war started with Hamas terror attacks against civilians in Israel, where many were killed and taken hostage. Israel, which is supported by the USA, responded by bombing targets in the Gaza Strip and eventually moving in with ground forces. Hezbollah and Iran remained fairly calm at first. But as Israel’s war in Gaza became more and more about the extreme suffering of the Palestinian population, they responded with attacks against Israel. In recent days, the conflict has escalated, culminating in Israel’s systematic killing of Hezbollah’s leaders. The massive rocket attack from Iran targeting Israel is a new escalation.
It’s time to put down the desire for revenge once and for all. The blood cannot continue to flow. After a stabilization of the situation, it may be time for real talks between Israel, Palestine and Iran. Sooner or later, old enemies will have to lay down the hatchet.
A two-state solution
A two-state solution is the only conceivable outcome that can turn the Middle East into a stable region. The mistakes that were made when Israel was created cannot be undone. The Palestinians must accept that. The state of Israel is there to stay. In the same way, Israel must accept the Palestinians’ right to their own land.
In such a two-state solution, the 1948 borders must be the basis. Israel’s annexation of land after this must be returned to the Palestinians. The time to start a process towards lasting peace is now. This is a conflict that must be stopped.
