As expected, Yekaterina Duntsova was not allowed to stand as a candidate for the presidential election in Russia. The election will be held in March 2024. In a previous blog I wrote that it was a presidential election where the outcome is given in advance. Yekaterina Duntsova did not pass the eye of the needle, allegedly due to errors in the submitted documents.

Who is Yekaterina Duntsova

She is a politician and journalist from Rzhev, in eastern Russia. Politically, she is critical of Putin’s regime. She wants the war in Ukraine to end soon and wants full Russian withdrawal. Furthermore, she demands the release of all political prisoners, including Alexei Navalny who is serving a long prison sentence.

Yekaterina Duntsova announced her candidacy recently and submitted the necessary documents for approval. As expected, they were not approved. The candidates who get through are exclusively candidates who are aligned politically with Putin.

On December 17, her support group held an official meeting to nominate her as a presidential candidate. During the meeting, the power went out and the police entered the room. Although the power was switched on again and the meeting continued without drama, this tells about the conditions of the Russian opposition. The police’s entry into the premises is to intimidate.

A choice without alternatives

As I wrote in my blog. The result of the election is given in advance. The election is without any real opposition. Everything is done to prevent the opposition from standing for election. Yekaterina Duntsova is refused to stand for election. Arrest of candidates is actively used.

A large part of the opposition also lives outside Russia’s borders, in fear of arrests and murder. Many find it most appropriate to conduct their work outside Russia’s borders. For example, it may be better for a journalist to carry out critical journalistic work outside Russia, rather than in the country. Russia’s list of killed journalists is long.

We do not know what awaits Yekaterina Duntsova. Perhaps there will be false accusations against her, so that she can be placed in prison for a long time and thus another problem is solved for Putin’s regime.
