Aid package for Ukraine finally adopted

After months of Republican opposition, a major aid package has finally been passed by the House of Representatives. The aid package is absolutely necessary if Ukraine is to be able to resist Russian aggression. The fact that it took so long to get the aid through the House of Representatives is due to opposition from the Republicans. Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson is cited for his political courage in rallying enough Republican support to pass the Ukraine aid bill.
An aid package that shows a political divide
110 Republicans voted against the aid package to Ukraine. 100 voted for it. Among the Democrats, there was unanimous support for giving Ukraine the much-needed aid that this package represents. In the past, opposition among Republicans was even greater. Donald Trump is pulling the strings. Trump recently said that Ukraine was important, but that he wanted Europe to contribute more. These words, along with the work Mike Johnson has done to gather enough support, were crucial. President Biden has also said that the alternative to the aid package could be for US soldiers to go to war on European soil. The sum of this meant that 100 Republicans eventually supported the aid.
There is a clear distinction in US policy when it comes to support for Ukraine. Feel free to read my previous blog about this. For most Americans, Ukraine is a country far away and the understanding of Europe is so-so. This fall’s elections in the US could be crucial to Ukraine’s fate.
Mike Johnson and Joe Biden the architects behind the help
CNN writes that Mike Johnson put his own political career at risk when he actively supported the aid package to Ukraine. His courage to support democracy in Ukraine is deducted and his ability to narrow enough support in his own party was crucial.
President Joe Biden’s efforts must also be highlighted. His efforts to help Ukraine have never been in doubt. His statement that the alternative may be that the US may have to send troops to Europe at a later date may be the blow that turned Republicans around.
I am very pleased that the aid package for Ukraine went through the House of Representatives. This aid package will likely save thousands of Ukrainian lives, the aid package may also be what makes Europe’s democracy the long-term winner.
