Version 2022 of holodomor
It is 90 years since the Holodomor. The time when the Soviet Union under Stalin’s leadership starved millions. Holodomor means “To kill with hunger”. In Ukraine, special laws were introduced, which means that many see the Holodomor as an attempt at genocide. Between 3 and 10 million Ukrainians died of starvation in 1932-33. The reason is a failed policy. Today there is another attempt to starve entire Ukrainians, this time weapons are used. What is new compared to 90 years ago is that this time cold is also used. The attempt this time is partly to starve, partly to kill with cold.
version 2022
This autumn, Russia has stepped up the use of rockets and drones against civilian targets and against infrastructure. Firing rockets and drones at civilian targets are clearly war crimes under international law. Bombing of critical infrastructure is probably also war crimes.
Attempting to destroy the water supply and the electricity supply is hardly of any particular strategic importance to the war. The aim is to make life unlivable for the civilian population. Inflict such heavy casualties on civilians that the resistance ends and Putin’s brown army can prevail.
Broken electricity supply will not only make the winter cold for Ukrainians. It also wants that food cannot be cooked, bread cannot be baked and famine will spread. Putin’s only hope for victory is to terrorize the population. The terror consists in version 2022 of the Holodomor.
War between freedom and dictatorship
The war in Ukraine is a war between democracy and dictatorship. Between humanism and raw imperialism. Putin’s attempt to gain power over a neighboring country is nothing but imperialism. That there is a war between democracy and freedom on the one hand and dictatorship and contempt for people’s freedom on the other is pretty clear.
We see it well by looking at who supports who in the war. Ukraine is supported by a united world of democracy. Russia’s biggest supporters are countries like Iran and North Korea. Not directly countries that we associate with democracy, humanism and freedom. Holodomor version 2022 can be stopped.
