New attempt by Trump to become president

New attempt by Trump to become president

Donald Trump has confirmed that he is running as a candidate to become the next President of the United States. An attempt by the controversial and divisive ex-president to take the White House for a second time. Whether he succeeds is more doubtful. First, he must go through the nomination process in the Republican Party to be nominated.

Old post

This post is over 1 year old. The content might therefore be less relevant now.

The mid-term elections a big setback for Trump

The recently held mid-term elections were a big setback for Donald Trump personally. A weaker election than expected was the result for the Republican Party The candidates the former president supported did particularly poorly. The election’s big winner was Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis.

Ron DeSantis will probably be Donald Trump’s biggest challenger on the Republican side. DeSantis is not as divisive as Trump. Perhaps he can muster enough support to thwart Trump’s dream of moving back into the White House.

DeSantis will have far greater appeal outside the Republican core. In the Florida election, he won by a solid margin. Florida, which is described as a swing state, he won clearly. Donald Trump has already made well-known personal attacks on what is likely to be his opponent in the Republican Party. Such personal attacks as Trump is remembered for from his 4 years as president.

Attempts at division

Donald Trump is trying to isolate Ron DeSantis among Republicans. In many ways, Trump runs the party like his own backyard. A new challenger to the leadership position is something Trump does not want.

But it is probably Trump himself who loses out on such rhetoric. The by-election clearly shows that the people are getting tired of a person who is divisive. If the Republicans are to have a chance of winning the presidential election in 2024, they must take votes from the Democrats. Trump is hardly someone who can take these votes. More and more people in his own party realize this and want another presidential candidate.

At a time when the US and Europe are in the process of finding each other again, it would be a near disaster to bring in Trump as president again. His lack of understanding of Europe and his lack of goodwill towards NATO partly created a great distance. Trump’s unwillingness to do something about climate issues was also problematic.

I hope it stays with Trump’s attempt. His ability to divide the United States was unprecedented. His ability to create distance between the USA and Europe was remarkable. His ability to spread conspiracy theories was unrivalled. The world and the USA do not need such a president.

Above all, the US needs a president who respects democracy and doesn’t put out fake news about cheating in elections when he himself loses.
